More than 3,500 employees have so
far exited the industry through redundancies, including 400 employees from
Newmont Ahafo operations.
General Secretary of the Union,
Prince William Ankrah says it is unable to accept reasons being put forward by the
Newmont as constituting grounds for a further 600 employees to exit the company.
According to him, the prevailing
business outlook within Newmont does not support the intended redundancy
exercise.
“Factual evidence available to the
Union in relation to Newmont's vibrant business outlook conspicuously reflects
the posture of a business racing to generate supper profits at the expense of
people who have toiled to position the operations on a pedestal of growth and
progress,” Prince Ankrah said in a statement.
He noted that the Union has fully
cooperated with all companies that have built a convincing business case which
warranted labour rationalization.
But the GMWU is becoming worried
about the situation where courtesy calls and visits permitted by the President
and traditional leaders are being used by the leaders of multinational
companies as a sign of endorsement of business decisions or plans.
