The
Ministry of Education is abolition the 3-year allowance paid to trainee
teachers in Colleges of Education.
Prof.
Abakah however describes the government’s decision as a “monumental tragedy”.
According
to him, the move will discourage many people from poor background, but interested
in teaching, to enroll in teaching education institutions.
The
Professor of Languages is also not happy with the government’s inability to
motivate teachers in the rural communities.
He
suggests special allowances, accommodation and transport assistance for
teachers who take up appointments in rural areas.
Prof.
